Would it be possible for you to put your NSTextView within an NSBox or NSScrollView?

Yes, an NSBox should be possible.
I've added my custom view to an NSBox in Interface Builder and it has the desired effect.
To make this more generic I'm going to change the super class of my custom view from NSView to NSBox.
