What exactly doesnt work with setting a NSTextField as the status item's view?
Can you elaborate?

Well, I finally was able to get an NSTextFieldt into the menubar but it is static and not editable.
In IB I created a CustomView and put my NSTextField there and set all the options, editable, enabled, etc. I connected it to an NSTextField IBOutlet in my class, and made that the View for NSStatusItem.

I may be going about this the wrong way I will freely admit. :-)
