While this works fine for menus, which auto-size, the difference in length between different languages makes this approach kind of impracticable. You'd constantly have a two-word string on the title of a 300-pixel button or an 80-pixel button that clips its long title.


Also, it would slow down the entire system, because you're simply transferring load from the hard disk onto the CPU. And these days, with all the caches and lookaheads, the hard disk is the less expensive bottleneck to get rid of.

I'd rather suggest you look at Florent Pillet's excellent PowerGlot. I haven't used it in a while, but it basically lets you set up dictionaries and then performs automatic translations of words it's already encountered. Works pretty nicely for the apps themselves, even though last I checked it really could have used some support for localizing HTML help files.
