Gabriele,

I have not found any API to provide what you asked for. I also thought it was a wonderful user interface. At last WWDC, I specifically requested that there would be an API to provide this feature. I argued it could be expanded later on to import from a variety of sources, including iPhoto and .Mac. Apple took my request, but I have not seen anything come of it.

Does anyone know if the image-selection window used by iSight when
choosing a new avatar or by the Address Book application to assign a
new picture is available outside Apple? My searching has not been
fruitful...
