Short version: How do I get an NSPatternColor for metal in Mac OS X 10.2.x?

Long version: In one product we use NSColor's -windowBackgroundColor method to get the window's background color. In Mac OS X 10.3.x, this method returns a pattern that matches the window style. In Mac OS X 10.2.8, this method appears to always returns the aqua style, even if the window uses the metal style. How do I work around this?

I believe Eric Schlegel (Apple), who mostly frequents the carbon-dev list, had an answer about this a while back. I could be wrong, but I believe he mentioned that metal isn't implemented as a pattern.
