Keep in mind that hardware discounts at the Select level are only
available to _renewing_ members (at least that's been the current
rules). So the first year of having Select, you don't get them. This
particular year has been a very good year for renewing Select members
as Apple offered a second hardware discount.
For me, Select has been very cost-effective; even for my small
side-business at home. I look at my new-computer cycle which has been
approx every three years. So, I'm spending $1500 US for that block of
time for the subscription. But I've been typically saving at least
$1000 on the new system. Plus you get at least two free OS updates
(approx $260), the ADC mailing ($200) and DTS incidents (3 years would
provide a total of 6 of them). So you can see that it easily balances
all out and typically puts me a bit ahead. The seed access has also
really been a huge benefit.
FWIW, I second that. When I went to purchase my new computer the
select membership paid for itself AND I managed to "upgrade" from a 15"
PowerBook to a 17" PowerBook. The seed access is also VERY useful.
