I think sometimes Apple itself does not know where a given technology goes to. But you can try to learn from the past. I think I've found a pattern in Apples behaviour: Is the technology used in Apple's products? Yes: the technology is here to stay. No: the technology is in limbo, it might die sooner or later. Given the long time since you became a developer for the Mac (OpenDoc hehe!) I think you know all the examples by yourself.
