[OT] [NEWBIE] using SCM in XCode

sorry, I'm sure this is something really simple

I cant seem to get SCM working in XCode. I can add files to the repository but cannot then 'commit changes' as the documentation states. So there are never any entries in the SCM window. do I have to set up CVS in some way?
