System Serial Number / last 3 characters question

  • Subject: System Serial Number / last 3 characters question

After researching the archives I have managed to extract my Machine Serial Number (and Sales Order Number). Thanks mostly to posts by Werner Sinnhoefe, Alaster Houghton and Tomas Zahradnicky Jr.

The only questionable part of my code is the fact that I am using a constant (3) when extracting the ending characters of the Machine Serial Number string from the beginning of the Sales Order Number string.

Is there an official call I should be using to determine this offset in order to maintain future compatibility?

Otherwise can I rely on this offset being (3)?

Before this message breaks down into the political discussion of copy protection and the Machine Serial Number not being available on all machines: A) I don't care. B) I am using it in addition to the primary MAC address.

(I just weeded through more than 6 dozen archived messages where the mere mention of Machine Serial Numbers broke down into a copy protection debate without the original question being answered.)
