Hacking the Finder with APE to turn the proxy icon into a drop target..

Hello,

A feature I've wanted for a while, and which I've submitted to bugreporter (and will again quite soon :) is the ability to use the finder proxy icon as a drag or drop target. say I have the following directories /a/b/c. I'm viewing /a in list view, and want to move a file /a/b/c/foo.bar back up to just /a . Currently, I have to open two windows to do it, as I can't drag the file anywhere that will register as /a with the Finder (I just tried this). It would be so nice if I could just drag it to the damn proxy icon at the top of the window - if I can drag the proxy icon somewhere else (such as BBEdit's "search where" field for Finds), why can't I drag things ONTO it, as you can any other folder? (And for that matter, why shouldn't it work like any other folder, with reference to spring-loaded concept. (Although opening it would be a little pointless, since it's already open..)

I don't particularly expect this feature to get into 10.4, as code-freeze might have already begun (it'll be released around November, right? From all the changes they're talking about, I'd think there are a lot of bugs to be ironed through..)

So I'm left with the rather unsavory, but sometimes necessary, option of using APE.. The question is - what is the object that represents the proxy icon, and how do I get to it for any particular Finder window. (From there, it should be easy - just add a drop target method, which then uses AppleEvents to move the file. But there's probably a rub there I don't know about..)

Jim
