selecting images

I have a custom NSView with some NSImageViews inside it.

How do I make them "selectable"? In other words, when the user clicks on an ImageView it should get a focus ring; the user should also be able to Option-click several, or select several using a tracking rectangle.

I have 2 Cocoa books and read 2 mailing lists and I still can't figure out how to do any of these things, or even what the right terminology is. Apologies for being so thick in the head :)
