Yeah, that is annoying. I don't know why they're preventing third-party developers from making their own menu extras.

One reason could be that this is a buggy solution from a Look & Feel point of view on at least 2 points:


- on my OS X 10.2.8 machine, when I work with Project Builder and then go back to the Finder, the Menu Extras are drawn completely incorrectly

- on any OS X release, if you click on a menu title in an application and then move the mouse over a Menu extra, if you try to go back to the menu title, you can't. IMHO, the day this one is fixed, hens will need dental care.
