I never found a workaround and abandoned it. I did get a note a while back that it had been fixed for Tiger.

I just wondered if anybody had found a workaround to this bug (other than
abandoning the people picker altogether). I was wondering for instance if
anybody had managed to use a combination of double click invocation and the
selectedValues method? I had a quick play with this myself but didn't get
very far.
