D'oh! It was pointed out to me that the NSComboBox does in fact exist (I've never had need to use it, though it has been staring me in the face in IB all this time). The last few characters of the link sent to me below has it right, "BAAGGAHH"! ... :-)

In my defense, there have been Windows developers in the past who have referred to a popup as a combo box. Lesson learned. :-D
