Given that this is the case, I suggest (since I like PNGs so much)
saving your file, then using GIMP to convert it -- I've never had a
problem with PNG files saved from the GIMP. ~_^

This is, in fact, a bug with (apparently all versions) of
Photoshop. Try opening that file in any app, even on other OS's,
and you'll see that it's rendered darker than it should be. The
solution is to not use PNG. Use TIFF instead, or, if you absolutely
must have PNG's, save a copy as a PSD and use Preview to convert
them. You could also set up a quick Finder Plug-in via Automator to
convert your images to PNG's.
