While it is indeed a bad idea to prevent users from doing what they want, you can start providing Universal Binaries, now. Let the ppc part as is, #ifdef most of the i386 part out and replace it with a description about what's going on. Merging two different apps with lipo should work as well.

You'll get "This app doesn't work on Intel Macs"-type reports then, of course.
