you guys still find that configuration hideous.
I do.
I replaced the new icons with the old ones on my machine.
(BTW: That's the second Apple app I'll need to patch constantly. The
first one is Safari, to get rid of the ugly metal appearance; Safari
looks really good using the unified toolbar style.)
Mail's new icons are actually in breach of the Apple Human Interface
Guidelines:
"Each toolbar icon should be easily and quickly distinguishable from
the other items in the toolbar. Toolbar icons emphasize their outline
form, rather than subtler visual details."
It's rather funny that they use a Mail.app window as an example in
the Window Appearance section and from there link to the paragraph
above.
Those pill shaped buttons have several downsides:
- the actual icon is smaller and therefore harder to recognize
- they all have the same shape, which also makes it harder to tell
them apart
- the 'combined' versions are distinct buttons that show up in
addition to the single-purpose ones in the configuration pane
- the background color is - arguably - just plain ugly
So what's on the upside? I can't think of anything.
Andreas
