My most heartfelt thanks to everyone for their input on my development question!
I've gotten a lot of great feedback, and have begun researching the many, many books suggested by the list.
Lots to look at and read, and I thought I'd add a few books to the discussion that were suggested to me by a co-worker. He is in charge of our software development team and even worked for Apple (during the Sculley years) for a time. I'm learning more and more than he is outstanding at needs assessment and development project planning. He suggested a number of books:

Composite/structured design by Glenford J. Myers

Structured Systems Analysis: Tools and Techniques by Chris Gane and Trish Sarson
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0930196007/qid=1106960314/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/103-9786057-6226210?v=glance&s=books

Information Engineering: Introduction by James Martin
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/013464462X/qid=1106960175/sr=2-3/ref=pd_ka_b_2_3/103-9786057-6226210

Structured Analysis and System Specification by Tom Demarco and P.J. Plauger
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0138543801/ref=pd_sim_b_2/103-9786057-6226210?_encoding=UTF8&v=glance

Modern Structured Analysis by Edward Yourdon
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0135986249/ref=pd_sim_b_1/103-9786057-6226210?_encoding=UTF8&v=glance

They all got outstanding reviews and come highly recommended. Sounds like good knowledge for understanding how to capture and translate real world business systems into software equivalents. I know I find this technique difficult, and often get lost when I try to figure out what types of OOP objects should represent a real world concept, and which object should "own" a process or other object.

Thanks again to the group for your assistance!
