I don't think that's what Xcode is doing - notice that it's
impossible to create an unnamed project. I think it's creating a new
blank project folder and then using one of the -openDocument...
methods to open it.
But then one would need to write code to create a document in some
place other than the document class itself, no?
Not necessarily - you could simply make a copy of a template document,
maybe doing some simple text substitutions, like Xcode does. You could
give your users a lot of flexibility that way too, by allowing them to
store any document they create in the template folder.
