Testing IB, text fields not selectable?

When I select "Test Interface" in IB (2.4.2/XCode 1.5), only some of my text fields are selectable (allowed to gain focus). Clicking on them, and looking at them in the inspector window, they all have "editable" and "enabled" set. The only thing that seems different is that the ones that aren't selectable use my custom formatter. Is that the problem?
