Is it possible to have a tab view, but hide the tabs and control which tab is current programatically. That would give me the best of both worlds. Fast switching and less UI clutter maybe.

At some point in your programming career I think you need to start looking in the documentation... Don't use the mailing list as a replacement for basic research.
