The situation described is completely different though - the point is that the application /doesn't/ know and in fact can't know so the only thing to do is indicate in the UI that the thing you want to do might not be possible but to let you try it anyway.


I'd far rather use an application that tries to advise me of the situation to the best of its abilities and then fails gracefully if what I insist on doing turns out to be impossible than one that flatly refuses to allow me to do something that /might/ be possible.
