Ummm ... ZIP will lose Mac-specific info like the resource fork, though.

But BOMArchiveHelper is just a slightly beefed-up version of the ZIP command-line tool. I'm using it in Shovel to take care of unpacking ZIP archives.

I've talked about this at length in a previous thread on exactly this topic. The list archives are your friend if you need more detail.
