Apple recommends using disk images for delivering applications.
That this may leave a dmg file behind is not a problem at all, since a
lot of applications are delivered this way and the user is used to it
(or will become so).
While you may use internet enabled dmgs, I personally don't like them
at all, because I usually want to keep the files I downloaded. If the
image is internet enabled, I have to go and pick it out of the trash.
Whatever you do, do not use a custom installer!
(Or, equally worse, some crap third party installer ...)
I second everything Andreas says. I like dmg's, and I like to be able
to keep them as a backup.
Also, I never install anything that comes with an installer, unless it
comes from Apple or some other supplier I know and trust.
