My experience has been that learning how to do this is very hard at first,
but then it suddenly snaps into place and after that it is pretty easy. Sort
of like learning the Cocoa frameworks in general, only harder at first.
Some much-improved Apple documentation was posted in early June -- be sure
to read that, and not the older documentation on your hard drive. Also, a
new Sketch-112 example was posted in early June, and a new Skeleton.sdef
scripting definition example file was posted just a couple of days ago,
along with the new Sketch-112 sdef file.
If your app is to run on Tiger or newer, ignore all the documentation about
the older *.scriptSuite, *.scriptTerminology and 'aete' resource files --
you don't need any of that. For that reason, all of the third-party Cocoa
AppleScript articles out there at this time are somewhat obsolete and
potentially confusing (unless your app needs to run on Panther or older, as
well).
There is a nice utility available, called Sdef Editor, that you will find
very helpful in building your sdef file.
And subscribe to Apple's applescript-implementors mailing list. You're
likely to find more helpful information over there about implementing
AppleScript.
