File names are not indexed in the Spotlight store, so doing a file name search through Spotlight is very slow because Spotlight falls back on a normal type of search instead.

I've seen the Spotlight API catching some flak for not indexing file

people about it, I know other people have issues with it as well.
UNIX's locate tool blows Spotlight out of the water for this sort of
work. Are there any plans to make Spotlight index file names? I
personally would like to see this in a future OS X update.

Can you clarify what omission you're seeing? I have no trouble doing filename searches with Spotlight.
