Thanks for the sugesstion - that solved the problem as stated. I am, however, seeing a strange problem when I do that. The window will vanish when the variable is cleared, but it does not return when the variable is set.

How are you setting it? Are you sending the proper KVO notifications? (will/didChangeValueForKey?)
