Well I do understand all of this, and believe me, I have fought with them about this, to no avail. I can guarantee we will have write privileges. This functionality will only work if the Application bundle is in a volume/directory that they do have privileges for. It allows teachers to checkout files from there server to take home, like on there Laptop to do work on.

I am sure this is very easy but I can't seem to find an answer for it. How can I find my applications directory that it was launched from?

Something like [[[NSBundle mainBundle] bundlePath] stringByDeletingLastPathComponent].  However, please do not misuse this.  In general we discourage placing resources, saved files, etc. in positions relative to the application's location.  In particular, you should not assume that you can write anywhere near there--the user may not have permissions to write there, or the application may be on a file server or a read-only disk.
