Changing Preferences...

I'm working with Aaron Hillegass's book. In chapters 9
and 10, there is an example of using a Panel, accessed
thru the menu choice "Preferences...", to define
application preferences...and to be able to change
them. The book says that once the menu choice is
selected the AppController initializes default values
and that the Preference Panel is then moved on and off
the screen thereafter as the panel is opened and
closed. This all seems to be centered around a
Preferences.nib.

I have a MyDocument.nib with my main window in it and
I want to change a preferences from this window. The
default values for the preferences look to be
available only after The "Preferences.." menu is
selected...and only accessable from the Preferences
Panel created with Preferences.nib.

How can I creat the default preferences right from the
start and have them accessable from both the panel and
the document window.

Thanks,
Rick T.
