[ANN] PostgreSQL for Mac Project

G'day everyone,

This little announcement serves two purposes, one to let everyone know that it exists, and two, to gauge how much interest there is in expanding the project scope :-).

First, what is it?

PostgreSQL is an excellent open source Database Engine that performs well, and offers the most competitively complete SQL based RDBMS available in Open Source. It readily competes with most commercial offerings. It's weakness, particularly on the Mac, is installation and graphical management tools. For that reason, I started packaging PostgreSQL as a binary and writing some very basic utilities for the Mac to interface with it. The initial start of this went on VersionTracker, and while the tools are and were free, they were not OSS.

With this release they now are. Everything, from the core PostgreSQL to the code for the graphical tools is now under and OSI approved BSD license, and has been moved to SourceForge.

The tools are written in Cocoa, and leverage a simple ADO style framework that is also written in Cocoa and is built on top of libpq. The binary installer includes the tools, PostgreSQL 8.0.1 and the JDBC driver. The PostgreSQL ODBC driver is soon to be included.

In short, the project is aimed to be a one stop, single installer that includes everything needed to install, manage and consume a PostgreSQL database server.

The downside is that I'm still relatively new to Cocoa, and having come from a Windows background, this project isn't as bullet proof as I might like. The advantage to OSS is that some additional eyes are a good thing. With that said, I leave you to your day, and hope that anyone with an interest drops by and takes a look, comments, suggestions and critiques are welcomed.
