If that resource is available, OpenGL will manage the OpenGL necessary to get your image, and the pixel shaders to the graphics card when you render the CGImage. In that sense Core Image does shield you from a lot of gory details concerning OpenGL.

Er rather... Core Image will manage the OpenGL necessary....
