Personally, I'd rather take advantage of everything NSTreeController has to offer and just live with one or two hacks/workarounds. I think NSTreeController is particularly important if you're using Core Data, since you'd have to do all the fetching and KVO stuff yourself without it.

You know exactly how long it will take to work around known bugs, but it's hard to say how long it will take to write and debug code you haven't written yet.  :)
