Um, I'd say that's "behaves as intended". You want an Enhancement, not a bug fix.
The good news is that bugreporter is still where you want to go ;)

Mail 2 Mysteriously reports the number of unread messages in the left
hand column to the right of the folder. It's annoying me. I want to
report the bug so they can fix it.
