How exactly is subclassing so painful or intensive that you are ruling it out?* Consider me curious.

*and if you are ruling out doing additional work why not look to those who do [by Googling], such as third party offerings like Jiiva's ABC framework, which has a hyperlink textfield amongst other included widgets. Then you need only do drag, drop and configure in IB, which is what it appears you are after.
