Detecting volumes & types

Is there a way to detect if a selected "file" is a volume of sorts, and also be able to tell if it is a hard drive or an optical drive (i.e. a CD-RW).

I'd like to be able to make these checks with Cocoa, but it will also be good to be able to do this from AppleScript or a shell script.
