With respect, I've been casually trying to follow this thread and I can barely tell who favours which solution any more.


Perhaps if you write down a quick summary detailing the differences between different approaches and what the pros and cons are of each, you might find that everyone is actually in agreement?!

FWIW, if you write singletons the Cocoa way, but provide some sort of method "releaseSingletonForPerformanceReasons" which would do that and set the static variable to nil again, would that be acceptable?
