Is this an NSButton? In that case, I think you should check what highlight mode you have set for the button. There is one that is *supposed* to brighten up the surroundings of an image. (momentaryLight or whatever...?) IMHO those mode names aren't really intuitive, so try a few, the name may be the opposite of what it does or so...
