There's a new (over the course of the past few weeks IIRC) tool available from Unsanity that doesn't use their APE system but accomplishes this goal... it's called "Smart Crash Reports" and is available at http://www.unsanity.com/smartcrashreports/

If you prefer to do it your own way, look at the Adium open-source project which has its own custom crash reporter and intercepts crashes.
