I am using degrees of latitude and longitude, I'd better find out how I should be doing it. I thought that if the vertical and horizontal both had 360 degrees you could map using a grid?

Nope. The surface distance between degrees of longitude varies according to the latitude you're at. They're farthest apart at the equator, and converge at the poles. Also, you're trying to translate a spherical surface onto a flat map. That's going to result in *some* kind of distortion, no matter how you do it.

If you really want an accurate map representation, you're going to have to study some cartography. It's not as simple as it might appear at first glance.
