Have you stepped into the [NSData (NSDataExtension) inflate] method with the debugger to check what zlib's inflate method is actually doing? I notice that the category you're using ignores zlib's errors and just returns nil, thus telling you nothing about what went wrong. I would recommend checking all the return codes from the zlib library. Then you'll know what happened.

copied the NSData category over into my project. I
also dragged the libz.dylib into my project from the
/usr/lib folder.
For whatever reason, it will not inflate the file.
