rootless NSOutlineView

I'd like to create a rootless NSOutlineView.

I have been trying to navigate my way through the delegate methods in AppController.m in the NSOutlineView example at:

/Developer/Examples/AppKit/DragNDropOutlineView

It's unclear how the rootless display actually happens. Does anyone know the magic trick?

Returning the number of children only for non-nil items doesn't display the root item, thus hiding all the children of the root item.
