Thanks for the reply. In case anyone is interested, I actually just ended up writing an input manager. Despite the fact that they have recently been becoming evil, it gives me much more flexibility and reliability.

I will also file an enhancement request (It looks like spotlight searches in the finder don't even put the search on the find clipboard)
