I've given up on the prefetching and batch faulting for now, since that's apparently not where my problem is. I've filed an enhancement request on the documentation, because it's not at all clear to me. I'll probably come back to it later.

Is the document corrupted?

I'm starting to think so. I have so far managed to import as many as 1525 objects without crashing, and then 1550 with a crash, so the problem is apparently somewhere between those two points.
