The reason is that if the file/folder name has a slash in it the
system will think it is a path and not a name, so if you replace it
with a colon all is okay. But if there is… um… oh. I thought that
having a colon in the name would mess it up and it does but in the
Finder you can't name a folder to have a colon in it. So I'll just
leave that out. Oh well.
