Call me an arrogant UNIX guy, but "aren't really supposed to" isn't
actually in my vocabulary. :-)
Seriously, if Mail.app doesn't support such a feature, I daresay
Mail.app has a bug. I'm willing to work around the bug, either using
an unpublished interface, or by creating a plugin to provide the
functionality I need, but of course I'd much rather that Apple fix the
bug...

been solved.
Just be aware that a future OS update (whether via Software Update or a
future 10.x) will probably break this code.
Then when your app crashes, users won't blame Apple for having
"unpublished interfaces" (the typical term is SPI). They'll blame the
app that's crashing. And they won't give you a free pass because you're
a UNIX geek :)
Do what you've gotta do... but I'm just sayin'.
