You can use EyeTunes, an open-source framework that gets all information about iTunes and also controls it. I use it in FetchYourLyrics and it is really good.

I need to control iTunes, though I have not received a precise specification request yet. I thought it preferable to use Apple Events for speed, and while I would guess that this is possible, I have not found any Apple documentation on how to do so. Could anyone point me towards some documentation on this? I'd rather not rely on Applescript if I could avoid it, so as to minimize response times. Apple events would seem to be preferable, at least prima facie.
