One possible solution would be a custom glyph generator to substitute a visible glyph for NSControlGlyph. Another would be a custom typesetter implementing actionForControlCharacterAtIndex: and boundingBoxForControlGlyphAtIndex:forTextContainer:proposedLineFragment: glyphPosition:characterIndex:.
