I would not call NSAlert "a convenience method for a simple sheet". It's a class that encapsulates functionality to display alert panels, either as regular a standalone application modal panel, or as a sheet. It replaces (or possibly complements) the old AppKit functions with the same purpose.


(I think that one of the major reasons why they introduced NSAlert was to complement NSError. Among other things it provides better support for localization of alert messages.)

I will of course agree that modal panels and modal sheets are similar in many ways - but they're still different enough that we need to keep them apart when talking about them.
