The drawer is optional, but would be nice to have for space reasons. It is
something I came up with today so am not sure if it will be the best option
yet.

It really makes more sense as a Pref Pane and we are already using a tabbed
interface. The drawer would contain a small thumbnail preview image a bit
like the Preview application.If we put the thumbnail on the main window, it
gets more cluttered, and would have to be smaller.
