One final suggestion: Do without the drawer. Users don't expect
drawers to appear on the system preferences window. Why should your
prefpane be any different?
As a long time Mac user (and as a developer) I agree, wholeheartedly,
with this suggestion.
The drawer is optional, but would be nice to have for space
reasons. It is
something I came up with today so am not sure if it will be the
best option
yet.
I'll add my vote to the list of people advising against using a
drawer. As a user, I wouldn't like it for the reasons others have
already stated. As a developer, I don't like because it seems wrong
for you to add something to a window that you don't technically
"own" (seeing as you pane is really a "guest" hosted by the System
Preferences application).
It really makes more sense as a Pref Pane and we are already using
a tabbed
interface. The drawer would contain a small thumbnail preview image
a bit
like the Preview application. If we put the thumbnail on the main
window, it
gets more cluttered, and would have to be smaller.
I think there a couple of more elegant ways of handling this. For
example, you could pop-up a larger, floating version whenever the
user mouses-over the thumbnail (for example, as Adium does when you
mouse-over the icons in the buddy list). Another technique would be
to pop up a floating panel (think Inspector) either when the user
presses a button or clicks on the image.
Cheers,
Greg
